» Google has a Jabber server

If you have a Gmail account, you can also log into Google's new Google Talk service. They have their own client but it is limited to Windows. Fortunately, it's a Jabber server under the hoods :) Here's how to connect using Gaim, but it applies to other IM clients as well. My JID over there is pascal [DOT] bleser [AT] gmail [DOT] com ;)

» FOSDEM 2006 kickoff

Yesterday we had our first FOSDEM meeting (so let's call it a kick-off) with a nice BBQ at Jan-Frederik's place (thanks for the hosting, Jan, was very enjoyable :)). We discussed quite a few issues and ideas to improve the FOSDEM event in 2006 and it sure smells like 2006 will be a really good one ;) To me, we really need to focus on the event with the same "sizing" as the 2005 edition (not more rooms, not more projects, not more booths) but greatly enhance the quality in terms of organization and make the event a nicer experience to everyone. We're aware of the issues we had in 2005 and we will address those, for sure.

» SUSE 10.0 includes apt and yum

As Christoph Thiel blogged about it, I may now consider it official: SUSE 10.0 includes APT (apt4rpm) and yum ! :-) That's great news for all of us third party RPM providers, because we've been advocizing the use of APT on SUSE for quite some time, and mostly provide our packages through APT repositories (although Red Carpet and YaST repositories are provided as well for both Packman and my site). APT is already included in SUSE 10.0-beta2, and yum will be in SUSE 10.0-beta3 (although you can already download a preview of the yum packages now from Christoph Thiel's extra packages). Note that those are "unsupported" by SUSE, with YaST2 still being the only supported installation repository, but it's great news nevertheless, as apt and yum will be included in SUSE >= 10.0, without needing to provide and install those from 3rd party sources.

» Dropping support for SUSE 8.2 and weird combos

Yesterday I've decided to stop building packages for SUSE 8.2, as it has also been dropped out of support by SUSE (or will be with the release of 10.0 final). I won't build RPMs for the weird combos like SUSE 9.1+KDE 3.3 and SUSE 9.2+KDE 3.4 from now on either, as it's a pain to maintain and because I won't be able to integrate those packages properly into Packman (because they don't support such alternative distribution combinations). On the other hand, I started building RPMs for 10.0-betaX. Also rewrote my site's front page to something more cleaned up and with a bit more details about how to install my packages on your box, including announcing Red Carpet repository support (which is live since about a week or so). And, yes, you actually just read that: I'm going to join Packman, but more about that later on ;-) I'm also considering to stop building my packages for SUSE 9.0, but I'm not sure yet about it. If you still have SUSE 9.0 and you're a heavy user of my packages, please do send me a mail to tell me about it. If I don't get many of those on the next days, I'll most probably delete my 9.0 chroot (which means no more SUSE 9.0 RPMs). Of course, existing packages will be kept as they are new, it's just that I won't build or update new packages/releases for those versions. Sorry if that's bad news for you, I hope you all know I always try hard to satisfy my users' requests and needs, but it's a very, very tedious job to build RPMs on that many SUSE variants, so... do consider upgrading ;-) and thanks for your understanding.

» Gaëlle, day five

It's day five, and we're coming back home this afternoon. Have to prepare a lot of stuff (well, #1 on the list is milk for the baby ;)) and she's probably going to be a bit nervous, but once we've settled it's home sweet home again. Up to now, she's been a little angel: quiet, sleeping a lot, letting her mother more or less sleep well at night. And we hope it's going to stay that way (I said we hope ;)). Still got 3 weeks off before going to work again.

» Gaëlle, day one :-)

Photo of Gaëlle Yesterday (Aug 2nd) at 17:50 she was finally there and as one might expect, we're sooooo happy :-) 51cm and 3.055kg, everything went well and her mother is well up.

» Gaëlle - 1

Tomorrow is the day my little girl (Gäelle) shall be born :-) So... don't expect to see much from me in the few next days ;-)
